Outreach workshop at Portsmouth City College IPP

Me and Helena were asked to run a workshop for an outreach session that would be taking place for a class at the Portsmouth City College. The session would start with our tutor doing a presentation about our course and then that would be followed with the workshop.

Our tutor already had a base idea of what we could do, making concertinas and using the letterpress as stamps, but we wanted to bring our own style of workshops from our society sessions. So we planned to use prompts and have the student choose two that they could merge, this would help with the initial 'not knowing what to draw' which plagues so many creative minds.

I found the experience incredibly helpful and inciteful, as I was able to talk to the teacher of the class who was previous student of the Illustration course I am on right now. It was interesting to hear his views on teacher further education (college level) and the path that he had taken to get where he is.

As for the workshop, a lot of the students seemed to really engage with the task and found is quite fun. It was nice to talk to them and get there view on the two prompt idea. There were a couple students who wouldn't engage and couldn't understand how to merge the two words, but it seemed that they were extremely keen to draw there own thing and they way they acted wasn't really for us to deal with (as we have not experience with teaching).

Overall it was a great experience and a stepping stone for (hopefully) all of the other teaching/workshop experiences to come.

Business Cards IPP

Like I mentioned for the stamps, I originally made some designs that could either be stamps or business cards. And after getting some feedback from friends and tutors, I was able to pick out the strongest ones (and also make some new ones) and draw them in more detail on procreate.

After looking on the Moo website I found that you could submit a few different designs, and although I am not going to order from there because my budget does not allow for it, it was nice to gauge the different styles and sizes of industry standard business cards.

For the backs I scanned in the stamp I made of my Instagram handle. As that's really all I need for the back. Then I printed them on some thicker card.

I think they look good and they show a range or styles, but in an ideal world (where I had money) I would get them professional printed as it really does make a world of a difference.

One that I didn't include because it looks too different. And I didn't like the blood text.

Making a Zine for Self Promotion IPP

For one of my multiples I created a zine that showcases some of the work from my sketchbook, specifically of the zombie heads and figures as I am particularly proud of them and I think they will catch the eye of horror fans.

I wanted to go all in on the horror themes as that is by far my favorite subject to draw. I used textures that I created with ink, and a hand inked lettering for the front cover and back cover. I was starting my stamp obsession while making the zine and because I had nothing to put on the back cover I decided to add stamps to the backs to make them more unique.

I used a few different papers to print the zine but I think that it can really be printed on anything I have spare (although it looks good on the orange). This way I don't have to spend lots of money on fancy papers (I could if need be), and I can recycle other things.

Rubber Stamps IPP

I randomly bought a rubber in the art shop because there was a little sign that said they were good for making stamps and I wanted to give that a go. I also had the idea that it could be great for my promotional material and multiples, as I could stamp my zines and prints with my logo or a call card type thing. I ended up getting really into stamps because they were extremely fun to make, I also love the texture the ink leaves on the paper.

I thought that I would kill two birds with one stone by making business card designs as well as stamp designs because that way they could be one in the same or I could pick and choose from them. I turned some of these designs into stamps that I could use on the back of my zines. I then wanted to make a bigger stamp but couldn't find a cheep big rubber block so I used 4 small rubber together that would piece together to make a big stamp.

I also got into fungi because of the theme of the zombie ant fungi, so I made a bunch of mushroom stamps that I could use wherever. Ceri also showed me a stamp book that gave me lots of ideas and its safe to say that I will be making more in the future (even after uni).

I tried making stamps with Lino material but it just wouldn't hold the ink, and it printed very poorly. :(

Drawing The Pages of my Comic (First few pages)

Now that I know what my method is I can just crack on and make some pages. :)

I messed up a few bits on the pages but I just cut out a piece of paper a stuck it over the error and then redrew over it. This worked out well and saved me lots of time. I could always edit it in post as well but I wanted to save future me some time.

Zine Formats IPP

I tested out lots of zine formats so that I could choose one for my zine multiple I want to make. Helena showed me this Instagram account that has really nice tutorials on how to make some pretty funky zine patterns. And I like to think that me and Helena have quite a lot of experience with zines, now that we've made so many, but even I haven't tried most of these.

I decided on the pants zine for my multiple because I like that you could make a pocket in the middle or have a long landscape piece at the middle if you wanted.

Banner and Profile Picture Design Workshop IPP

We had a workshop in which Ros gave us some templates so we could come up with concepts for our profile pictures and banners. I didn't necessarily need this but I found it fun to experiment. I am also a big advocator for using cropped out bits of already existing work so that it doesn't kill too much time.

I really like the banner with a bunch of zombies walking past, because this is going to be a panel in my comic as well. So it could work out nicely.

Final Comic and Printing

After a lot of InDesign and colour printing troubles, I was able to print a nice copy of the final product. I will need to print more to se...
